Waihī electronics industry

An electronics industry grew in Waihī from the early 1930s, but was threatened in 1986 when Philips, which specialised in television manufacture, closed. A group of workers made redundant then joined forces to buy the factory and create new jobs. The venture was the subject of a 1990 television current affairs item.
