Kōrero: Hauraki–Coromandel places

Broken Hills mine

The Broken Hills gold mine, near Hikuwai, operated profitably in the early 1900s but its potential was not fully exploited. A hundred years later it was reopened by another mining company, working under a special-use permit as the mine was by then located on conservation land. In this 2010 television current affairs item the company staff show the quartz reefs that are mined and then crushed to extract the gold and silver within.
