Ngāti Whanaunga elder Marangai Conner, in a 2010 television documentary, talks about the history of the Manaia Harbour, which has many sites of significance to local Māori. Manaia has the largest Māori community on the Coromandel Peninsula; its people are of the Ngāti Pūkenga, Ngāti Whanaunga and Ngāti Maru tribes.
