In June 1999 the US international trade commission recommended tariffs on lamb imports from New Zealand and Australia, in response to protectionist lobbying from the American sheep industry association. New Zealand farmers mounted this protest at the US embassy in Wellington. The tariff, to last three years, was approved in July 1999; however, the World Trade Organization ruled against it in January 2001.
