One of the most charming historic buildings in Akaroa, on Banks Peninsula, was a pub called the Madeira. It was given its name by Antonio Rodrigues (pictured), a native of the Portuguese island of Madeira, who settled in Akaroa with his wife in 1858 and opened the Madeira Hotel in 1871. He ran the hotel until his death in 1905.
