Early in the 20th century, experiments proved that citrus trees would fruit in the Bay of Plenty where pip and stone fruit trees did not. By 1930 there were nearly 300 citrus orchards in the region. Lemons were the most important fruit processed. Here they are being packed at the Tauranga citrus marketing cooperative’s plant on 13th Avenue, Tauranga. Citrus canker blighted many lemon orchards in the late 1930s, and subsequently grapefruit and other citrus fruit were also planted.
