Kōrero: Bay of Plenty region

Ōpape

Ōpape

The beach at Ōpape is where the Nukutere canoe landed from Eastern Polynesia, about 700 years ago. It brought the forebears of the Te Whakatōhea tribe. Moutohorā (Whale Island) can be seen on the horizon. In the distance at left is the sweep of the western Bay of Plenty coast.
