The 1980s saw a boom in office building construction in Auckand and Wellington. Most new buildings followed their modernist predecessors in being boxy glass-and-steel towers, but some shunned this template and sought to create something more interesting. This included the National Bank Centre in Queen Street, Auckland. Designed by Glossop, Chan Partnership and opened in 1987, it comprised two oval glass towers that sat on a street-level podium.
