Former Wanganui Departmental Building

Former Wanganui Departmental Building

This is a view across the former Wanganui Departmental Building. Designed by the architectural division of the Ministry of Works and opened in 1979, its brutalist design was indeed brutal, the building resembling a prison more than an office block. The planting of vegetation helped to soften its hard forms. In 2014 the building was occupied by a polytechnic.
