He wāhi nui a Ōhiwa mō te kai. Koianei te ‘kete kai a ngā iwi’ - a Tūhoe, a Ngāti Awa, a Te Whakatōhea. Nui te mātaitai me te ika ki konei. I te rau tau 1800 ka torotoro a Ngāi Tūhoe ki te raki, ki ngā pāpāringa o Ōhiwa. Ka whakatūhia e Tūhoe ōna pā ki te whanga.
