Kia tae ki te paunga o te rau tau 1900 kua kaha te whakaputa o te tuakiri o Ngāti Awa. Ka tū tōna poari kaitiaki, tōna reo irirangi me tōna whare wānanga, Te Whare Wānanga o Awanuiarangi. Nō te tau 1992 ka tuwhera te whare wānanga, nō te tau 1997 ka whai mana a ia hei whare wānanga whakawhiwhi tohu ōkawa.
