Women play netball on the Auckland Domain. Then called basketball, the game was first played in New Zealand about 1906. At that stage, players wore full-length skirts, hats, leg-of-mutton sleeves and shoes. The net was a basket, closed at one end, so the referee had to clamber up and retrieve the ball after each goal. The resulting slow pace, along with the clothes worn, meant that initially the game posed no threat to traditional definitions of femininity.
