Waimarama Taumaunu talks to her team, the Capital Shakers, during a break in their National Bank Cup game against the Southern Sting in Wellington in June 2006.
Playing for Canterbury while only in her mid-teens, Taumaunu was selected for the national team in 1981 and formed a formidable defence partnership with goal keep Tracy Fear. This helped New Zealand win the world championship in 1987. Assistant coach for the Silver Ferns from 2008, she took over as coach in October 2011.
