Ko te rā huritau o te hainatanga o te Tiriti o Waitangi i te 6 o ngā rā o Pepuere 1840, te rā ā-motu o Aotearoa. He maha ngā tūmomo āhuatanga ka whakanuia ki te whānuitanga o te motu i te rā o Waitangi. Ki tūtata mai o Ōamaru i te tau 2002, ka hui mai ngā tāngata o reira ki ngā toka pākeho ki te taha raki o Ōtākou, ki te whakanui i te rā o Waitangi. I whakaritea tēnei rā e te Poari Kaitiaki o Waitaha Taiwhenua O Waitaki.
