The Office of the Banking Ombudsman was established by the Bankers’ Association in 1992. Since July 2007 the office has been institutionally separate from the association. The banking ombudsman can make an enforceable award against a bank of up to $200,000 in respect of direct loss or damage. Liz Brown (pictured), the second banking ombudsman, was appointed in 1995 and Deborah Battell, the third to hold the office, in 2009.
