Professor Robin Smith, of the University of Otago Chemistry Department, is one of the inventers of the biotechnology-based drug MitoQ, the first major drug to be developed in New Zealand. MitoQ has been developed over more than 10 years by Antipodean Pharmaceuticals. Trials in April 2008 showed that it may be a very effective treatment for people with liver disease.
