Transporting oil products, 1908

Horses and carts shift cases of kerosene and benzine to the Colonial Oil Company warehouse on the Hutt Road in Wellington. Notes in the photograph’s margins suggest this load of fuel came into port on the Monarch, and was worth £542 5s. 7d. In the 19th and early 20th centuries New Zealand oil products were moved from ship to rail, and then by horse and cart.
