Oil distribution, 2009

Oil distribution, 2009

In 2009, four big oil companies shipped crude oil to Marsden Point, near Whangārei. About 50% came from the Middle East (Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Qatar) and about 40% from the Asia-Pacific region (Australia, Malaysia, Indonesia and Brunei). Occasionally crude oil comes from Russia, Europe or Africa. The rest is local – in 2007 it made up 3% of the refinery’s intake. Just under 50% of Marsden Point’s product was carried by pipeline down to Wiri in Auckland. Around 46% of refined oil was transported by coastal tanker (in 2009, the Kakariki and the Torea) or international vessels. About 4% of the refinery’s product was carried by road tankers. The refinery was shut down in 2022, From the regional terminals, oil products are distributed by road tanker – each portside terminal serves a substantial area. The exceptions to this are the aviation fuel pipeline that goes directly to Auckland airport, and a pipeline between Lyttelton and the Christchurch suburb of Woolston. Tankers carry diesel, petrol and aviation fuel and have to be cleaned when the fuel changes.
