Marsden Point oil refinery, near Whangārei, was built in 1964. It became the entry point for all the imported oil used in New Zealand. A small amount of locally produced oil also went to the refinery for processing. After being refined, the oil was shipped by coastal tanker around the country, or piped to Auckland. The refinery was shut down in 2022.
