Whakarewarewa, around 1900

This is the entrance to the Whakarewarewa thermal area, around 1900. Behind the thermal zone are the plantings of the Whakarewarewa nursery, the forerunner of today’s Whakarewarewa Forest. The modest buildings on the far right were inherited by the Forestry Research Institute, later SCION.
