Soaking in steaming hot water was a favourite experience in the thermal regions. These young Māori are bathing in a silica basin at the Pink Terraces on Lake Rotomahana, near Rotorua, around 1880. The terraces were lost when nearby Mt Tarawera erupted in 1886. They were thought to have been completely destroyed, but in 2011 scientists found remnants of the terraces on the Rotomahana lake floor.
