Kōrero: Protected areas

Waikawau Bay

Waikawau Bay

An area of land at Waikawau Bay on the Coromandel Peninsula was bought through the Nature Heritage Fund in 2003, and added to land already owned by the Department of Conservation. The deal prevented the owners, Auckland University, from selling this piece of pristine coast to developers. The government set up the fund in 1990, to help fill gaps in New Zealand’s protected area system.
