Peter Morton releases a North Island brown kiwi into the Tongariro Forest in 1999. The Tongariro Forest Conservation Area is a stewardship area, and has particular importance for the survival of brown kiwi. In the ‘Operation Nest Egg’ programme, eggs were collected and hatched in captivity, to avoid predation by stoats and cats. The young birds were later freed in the forest.
