Kōrero: Wairarapa region

Famous family

Famous family

This sculpture stands at the entrance to Martinborough’s Palliser Estate winery, one of the region’s largest. Palliser Estate’s managing director and co-founder was Richard Riddiford, a descendant of Daniel Riddiford, who established several sheep and cattle runs in southern Wairarapa in the 1840s and 1850s. These generated considerable wealth and made the family part of New Zealand’s pastoral élite. The Riddifords remain influential in Wairarapa’s business and social life.
