I te nuinga o te wā i tapaina te whenua ki tētahi tipuna. E ai ki te kōrero, ko te maunga o Te Mata me ngā puke i ōna taha te okiokinga o Rongokako, te koroua o Kahungunu (nāna ko Ngāti Kahungunu). Ka kitea tōna āhua e takoto ana. Ko te ingoa tika mō Te Mata ko Te Mata-o-Rongokako. He rite te whakaaro o ngā Pākehā tōmua mō Te Mata, arā, he rite tōna āhua ki te tangata e moe ana.
