Te Rangi Pai recital, 1906

Contralto Fanny Rose Howie, who performed under the stage name Te Rangi Pai, forged a successful singing career in New Zealand and England. She returned to New Zealand in 1905 and made several tours throughout the country in the following two years. After this, Howie was forced to retire from public performances due to ill health, and she occupied herself with teaching music and composing songs. Her most famous composition is the lullaby 'Hine e hine', which she wrote around 1907. Listen to soprano Te Mauri Meihana sing 'Hine e hine' in a recording from around 1930.
