The Talkeries retail chain, which specialised in selling records and phonographs, was established in 1901. This is Thomas Dwyer's shop in Masterton. He stocked recordings by the French company Pathé and American firm Edison Records. The notice above the office door says, 'Kindly note: Phonographic records will be rendered on request at a charge of 2d each. Melba, Crossley and Caruso Operatic Records 6d each. In event of a purchase being made there will be no charge'. This meant that people could listen to a record for a small charge – slightly more for stars Nellie Melba, Ada Crossley and Enrico Caruso – or for free if they bought the record.
