Charles Begg trained as a piano maker in Scotland and established a successful manufacturing business there before emigrating with his family to Dunedin in 1861. He soon opened a music shop and also made, repaired and tuned pianos. In the late 1860s Begg stopped making pianos and concentrated on importing and selling instruments. He also sold sheet music and branched out into music publishing.
