He nui ngā whenua Māori ka riro i te rau tau 1800. Whai muri i ngā pakanga, ka murua ngā whenua o ngā iwi kīia ai e te kāwanatanga, he iwi whakakeke. Nā te huringa o ngā pānga whenua o ngā iwi Māori hei pānga mō te tangata takitahi, ka māmā ake te wehe i te Māori i ōna whenua. Ko ngā wāhi whero o te mahere ngā wāhi i hokona i mua i ngā pakanga o te tekau tau atu i 1860.
