This map shows the counties of England that provided 2% or more of the New Zealand Company emigrants. The figures are based on the immigrants’ place of last residence, not their place of birth. It would seem they came from three main areas – London/Middlesex, the Home Counties of the south-east, and the south-west. These last two regions were good sources of rural labourers and were the base for many of the New Zealand Company agents. Although quite a number came from Yorkshire and Lancashire, these regions had large populations and were under-represented on a per-capita basis.
