Māori as a percentage of the population, 1926–1976

The population of the Volcanic Plateau grew rapidly in the 50 years between 1926 and 1976. Total numbers of Māori increased, but their proportion of the population fell, as Pākehā and people from the Pacific Islands made their homes in the region.
