Kōrero: Fishing industry

This 1993 cartoon portrays government ministers Douglas Graham and Douglas Kidd as fishmongers who, in the Sealord deal, have cut up the catch, giving Ngāi Tahu tribe’s Tipene O’Regan the body and leaving little for northern Māori tribes. The Sealord deal of 1992 settled Māori commercial fisheries claims under the Treaty of Waitangi. But allocating the settlement among tribes took more than 10 years. In 2004 a governance body called Te Ohu Kaimoana was set up to oversee all Māori commercial fishing settlement assets.
