Francene Wineti was one of two recipients of Te Ohu Kaimoana’s most prestigious scholarship in 2004–2005. Te Ohu Kaimoana, established by the Māori Fisheries Act 2004, is a trust responsible for advancing the interests of iwi in fisheries. The scholarship involves spending 12 months studying in Tokyo but recipients must learn Japanese for a year before they go. It is funded in partnership with the Japanese company Nissui, co-owner of Sealord Products. Japan is a major market for New Zealand’s fin-fish exports.
