Ascent of Hochstetter Dome

Ascent of Hochstetter Dome

Few New Zealanders were interested in climbing mountains for recreation until the 1890s. Mountaineering was mostly introduced by overseas climbers. One early conquest was Hochstetter Dome, climbed on 27 March 1883 by Austrians Robert and Anna von Lendenfeld. They are shown here with their porter, New Zealander Harry Drew. This wood engraving is from Australasia Illustrated, published in Melbourne in 1886.
