Story: Hauraki–Coromandel places

Snow on Tokatea

View an extract from a digital story by Alison Rowe, in which she recalls an extremely rare event – a fall of snow on Tokatea ridge in 1939. Tokatea, at the summit of the route between Coromandel town and Kennedy Bay, was a site of gold-mining activity in the 1870s. In the early 2000s it is part of a scenic reserve with many relics of the gold mining days, and views out to the coast and inshore islands near Coromandel town.
