
The Ōrākei Kōrako thermal area, though partly drowned by the formation of Lake Ōhakuri, has silica terraces, geysers, hot springs and mud pools. Rautapu cave is a memorial place for Atama Mikaere, who used to guide visitors into the cave, and his brother Witaina. The two brothers died fighting in North Africa during the Second World War.
