The North Island main ranges abut directly on the Taupō Volcanic Zone. These are the Kaimanawa Mountains, seen from the Desert Road. Their slopes disappear abruptly beneath mudflows (lahars) and tephra from the central volcanoes. In the foreground is classic volcanic-zone vegetation – mānuka, tussocks and a few beech trees.
