In 2013 proportionately far more people in Horowhenua were aged 65 and over than in Manawatū, including Palmerston North. There was also a higher proportion of Māori, and people lived on a lower median income. Rural Manawatū had a much higher proportion of Europeans than Palmerston North or Horowhenua.
