Kōrero: Charting the sea floor

Bay of Islands

This modern chart of the Bay of Islands is published by Land Information New Zealand, the body responsible for producing official navigational charts. Point depths are given as well as contours (isobaths), which show underwater topography. Charts are vital aids for mariners, preventing them from grounding their vessels on sandbars, or damaging them on underwater rocks. The chart includes other aids to orientation such as navigation lights, lighthouses and buoys.
