Geological map of Nelson Province, 1864

In 1859–60, Julius Haast explored the Nelson and West Coast regions, finding traces of gold and discovering coal near Denniston. Observations by Haast and Ferdinand Hochstetter were combined in this geological map of Nelson province, published in 1864. Although based on scattered observations, it depicts most of the main geological features known today.
