New Zealand textile designer Avis Higgs trained at Wellington Technical College in the late 1930s and was appointed head designer by an Australian textile firm in Sydney in 1941. The Second World War curtailed fabric imports from Europe, which benefited southern-hemisphere designers like Higgs. This dress from 1945 is made up in one of Higgs's fabrics. It is a subtle repeated pattern of heads.
