This scorecard records New Zealand's first official 'away' test, against England at Lord's in June 1931. It was a marvellous game. After a meagre total New Zealand had England seven for 190 in their innings before Ames and Allen combined in a partnership of 246, giving England a lead of 230. In its second innings centuries by Dempster and  Page set England 224 to win. When play ended they were 78 runs short, but had only five wickets in hand. In three days 1,293 runs had been scored, 420 overs had been bowled and 34 wickets had fallen. The English were enthusiastic about the New Zealanders' performance and two additional tests were hastily arranged. New Zealand lost the second test, but drew the third when two days were washed out. In the scorecard those English players with initials were amateurs; those with surname only were professionals.
