Reading Antarctica's rock cores

Drilling down through ice and into the rock bed below the sea underneath, scientists have found evidence of environmental change over millions of years. The sedimentary layers yield information about climatic and tectonic history that could not be obtained any other way. New Zealand scientists have led a number of collaborative drilling projects. Work with Germany, Italy, Britain and the United States in the 2000s was formalised under the ANDRILL (Antarctic geological drilling) banner.
