The 1839–40 United States Exploring Expedition led by Charles Wilkes was the largest of the early expeditions to the Antarctic. Its six ships carried 433 men, including several scientists. This view from land over a bay and out to sea shows one of the ships, the Vincennes, and crewmen on land.
