Part of New Zealand's response to the Mau (Samoan independence movement) uprising was to send police to Western Samoa in 1930. One of them, Francis Gleeson, was an enthusiastic photographer. He put together an album of carefully captioned pictures. The page shown here includes landscapes, a group of swimmers (probably members of the police force, including Gleeson), and adherents of the Mau as prisoners and making kava with New Zealand police.
