Treasury staff, 1935

In the early 20th century, most government departments photographed all their staff once a year. This photograph of the staff of Treasury was taken on the steps of Parliament Buildings in June 1935. The secretary to the Treasury, George Rodda, is sixth from left in the front row; the newly retired secretary, Alexander Park, is on Rodda’s right. Bernard Ashwin, the dynamic assistant secretary who was to be secretary from 1939 to 1955, is on Park’s right. The department was still predominantly a male preserve but as the picture attests, one in five of its staff of approximately 100 was female.
