Kōrero: Foreign policy and diplomatic representation

This 1936 letter was sent to Minister of Finance Walter Nash by the New Zealand branch of the League of Nations Union, in appreciation of the Labour government's support for the league's objectives. The British-based League of Nations Union aimed 'to educate and make effective public opinion concerning the League of Nations'. The New Zealand branch formed in 1922 had as one of its aims to 'liberate mankind from the curse of War'. Its president in 1936 was Professor F. L. W. (Fred) Wood, head of history at Victoria University College, Wellington. Wood was also active in the Royal Institute of International Affairs and would write the volume on New Zealand in the worldin the 1940 centennial surveys series.
