Allen Curnow enjoyed Auckland’s West Coast beaches and, years after this photograph was taken, owned a bach at Karekare. He is seen here (in small image, back row, left) with friends, including the poet A. R. D. Fairburn (back row, right, and image on right), at Piha in 1937.
