This is the plan for the state-housing suburbs of Epuni, Naenae (including Waddington) and Taita in the Hutt Valley. These were developed from the mid-1940s and based on garden-city planning principles. The street plans of Naenae and Taita were curvilinear, whereas Epuni’s largely followed the existing Lower Hutt grid plan. Ample space was given over to reserves, allowing children to walk to school without crossing busy streets. The core of each settlement was given over to community amenities and shops.
