Kōrero: Building and construction industry

Surrey Hills Estate

In 1883 the 127-hectare Surrey Hills farm was subdivided for residential sale as Surrey Hills Estate, one of Auckland's first major commercial housing developments. Today the area lies within the suburb of Grey Lynn. In the late 19th century companies involved in the building industry were more likely to try and make money through land speculation than through actual building work.
